William Henry Crouch

William Henry Crouch was born on 19 May 1882 at Chiddingstone Causeway, the son of William and Mary Crouch, who made their home in the village at Penshurst, Kent. The 1901 census records him still living under their roof, and he remained connected to the area until the war drew him overseas.

He emigrated to Canada, where he joined up on 22 March 1917. Serving as a Private with the 46th Battalion of the Saskatchewan Regiment, part of the Canadian Infantry, he carried the regimental number 1010286.

William did not live to see the end of the conflict. He died on 1 November 1918, just days before the Armistice, at the age of 36. He was laid to rest in Aulnoy Communal Cemetery, where his headstone bears the words "Faithful Through All Even Unto Death".

His name is commemorated locally on both the Chiddingstone Causeway War Memorial and the memorial at Edenbridge Hospital. This profile was written by the village's local history society and last revised on 7 November 2007.
