Montague William Hewlett

Corporal Montague William Hewlett, who fell in the summer of 1918, is commemorated on the Chiddingstone Causeway War Memorial and also on the memorial at Edenbridge Hospital. Born in Kentish Town around 1884, he was the son of Edwin Henry and Alice Hewlett, and his family roots lay in Kent.

In the autumn of 1911 he married Nellie R Richardson, the union being registered at Paddington. The couple made their home at 5, Camps Hill, Chiddingstone Causeway, an address recorded under Tonbridge in Kent.

Hewlett signed up at Tonbridge, first serving with the Royal West Kent Regiment under the number 15609 before transferring to the 11th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, where he held the rank of Corporal with the service number 51752, also recorded as GS/51752. His war service earned him a single campaign medal.

He lost his life on 25th June 1918, aged 34, and was laid to rest in Plaine French National Cemetery in the Bas-Rhin region of France. Although he had already died by the time the roll was compiled, his name appeared on the 1918 Absent Voters List, entry 1809, which recorded him as Cpl Hewlett of Causeway, serving with the Royal Fusiliers under number 51752.
