Hubert Leslie Russell

Second Lieutenant Hubert Leslie Russell of the 27th Light Cavalry died on 1st September 1919, aged 19, following an accident at Rawal Pindi in India. He lost his life in a railway mishap close to the town, and his death was announced in The Times on Friday September 12th, which recorded him as 19 and a half years old and the only son of Mr and Mrs Hubert Russell. The notice gave the family address as Lyghe, Kent.

Born in Lewisham, London, Russell was the son of Hubert and Alice Russell, who made their home at South View, Leigh. He is commemorated on the Leigh War Memorial and on a carved prayer-desk in St. Mary's Leigh, which states that he died in his 20th year and was buried at Rawalpindi, India.

His grave lies in Rawalpindi War Cemetery, now in Islamabad, Pakistan, where 257 Commonwealth burials are associated with operations on the North-West Frontier; this information comes from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. His name also appears on the Dehli War Memorial.
