Herbert William Grubb

Herbert William Grubb was born in the autumn of 1893 at Leigh in Kent, the eldest son of Charles and Mary Ann Grubb. By the time of the 1901 census the family was living at Cinder Hill, and in later years his parents made their home at Stone Cottage, Penshurst, where Herbert himself was counted as a resident.

When war came, Herbert enlisted at Tonbridge and joined the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment as a Private, given the service number TF/3641 and posted to the 2nd/4th battalion. His service took him to Gallipoli, where he was wounded. He did not recover: he died of his wounds at sea on 23rd October 1915, at just 22 years of age. For his service he was awarded two campaign medals.

Today his name is recorded on the Helles Memorial in Turkey, and closer to home it appears on the war memorials at Penshurst and Chiddingstone Causeway, as well as on the Edenbridge Hospital memorial. This profile was published by the village's local history society and was last updated on 7 November 2008.
