G. Mitchell

The name G. Mitchell appears on the Leigh War Memorial, where he is recorded as serving with the Royal West Kent Regiment. It is thought he may have been George Mitchell, but identifying him has proved difficult. Researchers checked the regiment's roll of honour, the "Soldiers died in the Great War" records, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the National Archives medal awards database and the "burnt" service records held at the Public Record Office, yet no definite match for Mitchell emerged; a parallel search for Burdock was equally fruitless. Attestation papers for a George Mitchell were, however, located.

One possible family connection lies with William Mitchell, who married Mary, third daughter of Charlotte Bourner, in 1912. Charlotte lost three sons in the war, left Forge Square in 1936 to live with her daughter Mary at Moorden Cottages, and appears there on the 1937 Electoral Register.

Another candidate is George Leslie Mitchell Burdock, baptised at St Mary's, Leigh on 4 October 1894 (folio 28-224), mother Louisa. The 1901 census shows him born in Clapham and fostered in Maidstone. He married Nellie Godden in 1916, and their daughter Betty R. was born in late 1919. This profile was last updated on 23 October 2007.
