Anthony Lacon De Mallet Flower was born in 1911, the son of Capt. Leopold Flower, who did not live to see him grow up, dying in 1916. His mother, Helen Gladys Flower, formerly Sutton, married again in 1926 and became Mrs Roger Twitchell. By the time of the 1935 Leigh Electoral Register, Anthony was recorded at Park House alongside his mother, his stepfather Roger Twitchell, and Montague Flower. Montague, born in 1914, was the second son of the first marriage.
Anthony served in the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman, with the service number D/JX 215997, and was posted to H.M.S. Drake, the Devonport naval barracks. In Pinner, at a railway station canteen where Margaret Mary Moon was on duty with the WRVS, the two met and married on 28 March 1941 at the Parish Church there.
Weeks later, on 21 April 1941, Plymouth was hit by a major German air raid that claimed 750 lives, 113 of them at the barracks. While his companions survived an evening at the cinema, Anthony stayed behind to prepare for a commission exam due the next day, and was killed. He was 29.
Margaret Flower later joined the WRNS, with Park House given as her address in the 1945 Leigh Service Register. Anthony is buried in Plymouth (Weston Mill) Cemetery and is remembered on Leigh War Memorial.
