War Memorial
Leslie Walter Cyril Humphrey was born in early 1904, his birth being registered at Tonbridge. By the 1920s the family name appears in the village records, with Ellen Humphrey listed on the electoral registers between 1925 and 1936. Leslie himself is first recorded locally on the 1938 Electoral Register, living at 14 Powder Mills alongside John Edward Humphrey. He was still listed at that address when the 1945 Electoral Service Register was compiled.
During the Second World War Leslie served as a Private in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, with the service number 10565510. He died on 11 September 1945 at the age of 43, some months after the register had been drawn up, and was buried in Calcutta (Bhowanipore) Cemetery. A Roll of Honour entry records a Yorkshire residence in connection with his name. He is remembered on Leigh War Memorial.
